 KNOCKOUT ROUND

2013 AQS1 - Knockout

QUARTERFINALS

Jesse Nowak def. Phill Oltmann 4-0
The scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story of Jesse Nowak’s first quarterfinal against Phill Oltmann, who survived the tiebreaker frame earlier only to fall 4-0 in a match that featured several black-ball games.

Jim Whittaker def. Gordon Galenza 4-1
Gordon Galenza reached his first quarterfinal in a ranking event only to fall to Lethbridge’s Jim Whittaker, a former winner of the Canadian Senior Snooker Championship back in 2001.  Trailing 2-0, Gordon pulled a frame back on the colours to make it 2-1 but was unable to come out on top in the fourth and fifth frames as Whittaker moved on to the semi-finals.

Brad Grierson def. Jim Killey 4-0
A walkover victory and two well-contested 1-1 split matches in the group stage helped Jim Killey reach his first quarterfinal of the year, but ran into Brad Grierson who was dominant in a 4-0 win.

Justin Gaydos w/o-w/d Ken Anderson
Despite qualifying for the quarterfinals at his first attempt, there was no sign of newcomer Ken Anderson on the second day’s play and Justin Gaydos eased into his first qualifying semi-final without having to play a match.

SEMIFINALS

Jesse Nowak def. Justin Gaydos 4-2
In a closely-fought contest, Justin had a chance to take a two-frame lead early but Jesse Nowak was able to draw level and then pull away in the end to avoid the upset and reach his first Alberta Qualifying Series final.

Brad Grierson def. Jim Whittaker 4-3
A tense match was on the boil for the right to meet Jesse Nowak in the final as 75 year-old Jim Whittaker won the first frame, Brad Grierson won the second and as they shared the next four to send it to a decider, an exciting finish was on the cards. In the deciding frame, Brad trailed by 38 points with one red remaining on the table but a foul left him with a chance as Jim missed a ball on to add to the drama. After a tight battle on the colours, Brad managed to clear up to and including the pink, leaving a thin cut on the black to win the match. However, he hit the ball thick, leaving it just a few inches from the pocket with the white travelling down to the baulk cushion to make Whittaker’s game shot uncertain. He ended up missing it to leave another challenging thin black down the cushion and, after much deliberation, Brad cut the ball and watched it wriggle in the jaws before it finally dropped, earning him a 79-72 win and a place in the final.

FINAL

Brad Grierson def. Jesse Nowak 4-2

With three breaks of 60+ in the final, Brad Grierson once again came out on top over Jesse Nowak in the final, who put in a strong perfomance to fall only 4 frames to 2. Brad’s victory earns him 220 points towards qualifying for the 2013 Canadians and the two finalists share the top two spots in the table until the next event in Red Deer, November 24th!

2012 Alberta Snooker Qualifying Series – Event #1

The first of the 2012 Alberta Qualifying Series events occurred over the weekend of October 22-23rd, 2011 at Chalks Billiards in Calgary.  Tournament results are shown below:

GROUP STAGE

A number of new faces appeared in the mix for the first qualifier for 2012’s Canadian Snooker Championships and two groups of six players were drawn randomly to play for a knockout stage position on Sunday.

In a tightly-contested pool for Group A, Red Deer’s Dave Kutney dominated the field and topped the table without losing a single frame, while Brad Grierson’s return to the competitive scene was punctuated by a third 2-0 win over Randall Morrison in his final match to make the difference between the second place position and potential elimination. David Tinsley came away with the third seed, equaling Brad in frames won but possessing only two 2-0 match wins over Brad himself and newcomer Rahul Shrivastava. Jesse Nowak’s 2-0 win over Randall Morrison assured him the 4th seed out of Group A.

After winning his first 4 matches without dropping a single frame, newcomer Bill MacLean looked to be running away with Group B until his undefeated run was brought to an end by taking a 2-0 loss to Jesse Nicol in his final match. Bill came away with the top seed and Jesse’s win guaranteed him a position in Sunday’s knockout round after a walkover win from Tom Jackson, who had to withdraw from the event.

Justin Gaydos began discouragingly, losing his first 2 matches 2-0, but would bounce back to defeat Jim Killey, Richard Strand and Jesse Nicol  by the same score and steal the second place position. An early withdrawal from Jim Killey gave Richard Strand a walkover in their match and subsequently the 4th place position.

KNOCKOUT ROUND

Following the group stage, players were seeded according to their rank and paired with opposite groups as shown below:

Quarter-finals
Dave Kutney 4  |  Richard Strand 0
Justin Gaydos 3  |  David Tinsley4
Bill MacLean 3  |  Jesse Nowak4
Brad Grierson 4  |  Jesse Nicol 0

Jesse Nicol snuck into the elimination round as the third seed after being the first player in Group B to defeat Bill MacLean late on Saturday and his prize was a meeting with Brad Grierson in the first quarterfinal of the day, losing in four straight frames. Newcomer Justin Gaydos gave David Tinsley a scare in the other quarterfinal, winning the first two frames and narrowly misjudging a pink ball to win the third. Tinsley cleared up in the third frame and won the next two to lead 3-2. Frame 6 was a tight contest that Justin won to push it to a deciding frame where Tinsley triumphed.

Dave Kutney stretched his unbeaten run to 14 frames with a whitewash victory over Richard Strand in their quarterfinal round, while Bill MacLean, the top seed of Group B, had a tough challenge against Jesse Nowak. Nowak notched another deciding-frame win to his record and advanced to the semi-finals to face Brad Grierson.

Semi-finals
Dave Kutney 4  |  David Tinsley 1
Brad Grierson 4  |  Jesse Nowak1

Red Deer’s Dave Kutney continued an impressive run, losing his first frame of the competition but still coming out on top 4-1 over Edmonton’s David Tinsley. Meanwhile, Brad Grierson opened up with a break of 66 to take a 1-0 lead, while Jesse Nowak stormed back in the second frame with a 51 of his own. Grierson would go on to build several more break in the 40s throughout the match and ultimately dispatched Nowak 4-1.

FINAL
Brad Grierson 4  |  Dave Kutney 1

Brad appeared to be in full flight heading into the final and came away with the victory, 4-1, despite losing both group stage frames against Dave Kutney. Brad picks up 220 points in the qualifying table and the tournament win.
