2013 AQT1 Red Deer – RESULTS

We had an excellent turnout in Red Deer at The Corner Pocket over the weekend and the second event in the Alberta Snooker Qualifying Series and the first of two Alberta Qualifying Tour events have been decided, with the four groups finishing as shown below:

GROUP STAGE RESULTS

2013 AQT1 Red Deer - Group Stage

Group A was widely considered the toughest, featuring two local Red Deer residents includinglast year’s qualifier David Kutney and former provincial finalist Peter Terpstra who squared up against Edmonton’s Ken Bartko and Calgary’s Richard Strand. Strand and newcomer Raymond Yau split their match against one another but were unable to compete with the rest of the field Kutney, despite winning two of his four matches, failed to qualify for the knockout rounds as he was unable to get a frame from Terpstra and narrowly missed out.

A smattering of players from all over the province appeared in Group B, including Calgary’s Jim Killey who came away with 1-1 draws in both of his opening matches against William Wong and Brent Balog that would prove to keep the group interesting towards the end. However, in order to have a chance to qualify, Randall Morrison needed a frame against Brent Balog but ended up losing them both. Balog snuck into the quarterfinals. Edmonton’s Ken Hamer ultimately got out of the group without losing a frame despite a number of close encounters, including a tricky re-spotted black against Randall, who still rues his 0-5 record in coin tosses over the weekend!

In Group C, a number of surprises were to be had as both Calgary’s Rodney Yim and Red Deer’s Chase Cyr advanced to the knockout rounds as seeded player David Tinsley was only able to steal a sole frame from Justin Gaydos. Chase was the only player to defeat Rodney and escaped the group without losing a frame.

The smaller Group D featured 75 year-old Lethbridge resident and former Canadian Seniors champion Jim Whittaker who returns for his second qualifying event of the season and succeeded in getting out of the group stage once again with a 2-0 win over Phill Oltmann and two splits with Dwayne Anderson and Gordon Galenza. Dwayne came out on top in the group, dropping only the one frame to Whittaker.

 KNOCKOUT ROUND

2013 AQT1 - Knockout

QUARTERFINALS

Jim Whittaker def. Peter Terpstra 4-3
Peter Terpstra, considered one of the favourites to win this event at the outset, looked to be well on his way to a decisive victory as he raced to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter-final. However, for the second time this season, Jim Whittaker was able to claw his way back to a deciding frame when facing a defecit after Terpstra missed a relatively straight-in brown to win the match 4-0. The game was destined to go all the way and after several exchanges on the final few colours, Whittaker ultimately potted the final black to make it to his second successive semi-final.

Chase Cyr def. Brent Balog 4-0
A fast-paced contest between Brent Balog and Chase Cyr was swiftly decided as Chase notched his twelfth consecutive frame in the tournament to end Balog’s run.

Ken Hamer def. Rodney Yim 4-1
Rodney Yim didn’t anticipate qualifying for the knockout rounds, but put up a good showing in taking the first frame off of the the cool-headed Ken Hamer, who continued to quietly move through the rounds with subdued fanfare and a 4-1 victory.

Dwayne Anderson 4-1 Ken Bartko
Riding a series of fortuitous bounces and a favourable run of the ball in general, Dwayne Anderson took advantage of his opportunities, potting key balls when he needed to in advancing to the semi-finals with a 4-1 triumph over Edmonton’s Ken Bartko.

SEMIFINALS

Chase Cyr def. Jim Whittaker 4-1
A match in which the age gap spanned a half-century, the meeting between Chase Cyr and Jim Whittaker ended up going the younger man’s way as he raced into a 2-0 lead, extending his winning streak to 14 frames before conceding the third to lead 2-1. Chase would eventually coming through a 4-1 winner to reach the final.

Ken Hamer def. Dwayne Anderson 4-0
After a good performance to defeat Ken Bartko in the quarters, Red Deer’s Dwayne Anderson didn’t seem to have anything left in the tank for the penultimate round against Ken Hamer, who reached the final by winning four competitive frames in succession.

FINAL

Ken Hamer def. Chase Cyr 4-1

With only two players left standing, the war of attrition came to an end, as did the surprise run to the final from Chase Cyr, as Edmonton’s Ken Hamer largely dominated the last match of the evening despite losing one frame on the black. Ken claimed his first ranking title and 320 points towards qualification for the Canadians in Toronto next summer.

Congratulation to Ken, Chase and all the players who came out to The Corner Pocket in Red Deer!

2012 Alberta Snooker Qualifying Series – Event #4

The fourth of the 2012 Alberta Qualifying Series events, and the first of the new year occurred over the weekend of January 21-22nd, 2012 at Chalks Billiards in Calgary.  Tournament results are shown below:

GROUP STAGE

Round-robin play saw 11 players divided into two groups of five and six, including the first qualifier appearance of the year from Bill Cormylo and Red Deer’s Brent Balog.

In Group B’s field of six players, Dave Kutney continued a strong run of tournament performance by playing 10 frames of snooker without losing a single one, while Balog would make a strong impression in Group A taking six frames and winning at least one against every opponent.

Both groups had to play tiebreaker frames for seeding. While Group A was in danger of heading for a 3-way tie, Phill Oltmann managed to steal a frame off of Brad Grierson, relegating him to third spot in the table. Brent Balog would go on to win the tiebreaker frame with Cliff Johnson for top spot to book a quarter-final match with Jesse Nowak, who lost the tiebreaker against Jesse Nicol.

KNOCKOUT ROUND

Quarter-finals

Jesse Nowak 4  |  Brent Balog 0

Brad Grierson 4  |  Bill Cormylo 1

David Kutney 4  |  Phill Oltmann 0
Cliff Johnson 4  |  Jesse Nicol 0

While Brent Balog looked to be one of the strongest players in the round-robin stage, he came up against an inspired performance from Jesse Nowak who powered his way to a 4-0 victory to book a semi-final spot. Meanwhile, Bill Cormylo’s qualifying bid was stopped in its tracks as Brad Grierson won the final three frames from 1 frame apiece.

David Kutney defeated Phill Oltmann 4-0 to win his sixteenth sequential frame this tournament, while Cliff Johnson also came away with a 4-0 victory after an early fourth-frame concession from Jesse Nicol who has yet to make it past the quarter-final stage this season.

Semi-finals

 Cliff Johnson 4  |  David Kutney 2

 Brad Grierson 4  |  Jesse Nowak 0

A tight matchup between Cliff Johnson and David Kutney started with Cliff taking a close third frame to lead 2-1, and then 3-1 after four. Kutney was able to pull back another frame but couldn’t get past Cliff Johnson who won 4 frames to 2 to prevent a repeat of the AQS1 and AQS2 finals.

Despite a tough fightback from Jesse Nowak in the other semi-final, Brad Grierson was able to win the close frames and Nowak fell 4-0.

FINAL

Brad Grierson 4  |  Cliff Johnson 0

The form and consistency of Brad Grierson ended up being too much for Cliff Johnson who was unable to take a frame in the final, losing 4-0.  Brad played twenty frames over the course of the event, losing only four en route to his second Alberta Qualifying Series victory.

Having played in three events, winning two of them and appearing in one other final, Brad Grierson has successfully earned a qualification position to represent Alberta at this year’s Canadian Snooker Championships.

Three spots are still available and news about the remaining four qualifying series events will be released later this week.
