Finstad reclaims Provincial title – 2012 Alberta Snooker Championship Results

Congratulations to Edmonton’s Tom Finstad, returning to play in the 2012 Alberta Snooker Championship and coming through a winner once again. After a closely fought group, Tom only made the knockout round by a difference of one frame, losing the group to Mike Abou Daher but then dominating the final with a swift 5-0 victory.

A very special thanks to The Ranchmen’s Club for their always-excellent service in a fine venue, and sponsors Home Investment Management for another successful provincial championship tournament.  Additional thanks to the crew from Shaw TV, who did a very professional job in the filming of the final which will air at a later date on their community programming network.

FINAL RESULTS:

GROUP STAGE

2012 Alberta Snooker Championship - Group Stage

Group A

Defending champion Warren Saffel narrowly missed out on the chance to take his title defense to the knockout rounds this year. He began strong on Friday night, losing only to Andy Chou, however his 2-1 defeat to Rob Phillips on Saturday would ultimately decide that there was to be a new champion this year. Rob Phillips and Andy Chou squeezed through to the knockout rounds, both finishing with a 4-1 record.

Group B

Red Deer’s Peter Terpstra started off strong with a surprise upset 2-1 win over Tom Finstad that threatened Tom’s chances at taking the title when Mike Abou Daher turned in a strong performance to win the group. Unfortunately for Terpstra, he would come away with the only victory over Finstad throughout the tournament, but narrowly missed the knockout round on frames.

Group C

In a group featuring three guys named Bill, Bill Cormylo would come out on top, going 4 for 4 in match wins, while Brad Grierson took the second spot, losing only two frames–both to Cormylo. Local Calgary pool player Bill Gunning was making his first ever snooker tournament debut and turned in an impressive performance with two match wins to finish third in the group.

Group D

Last year’s provincial semi-finalist and Calgary Snooker League finalist Jesse Nowak was given a scare early by newcomer Mike Robinson, but followed up his narrow 2-0 victory with a string of three other match wins, including a 2-1 victory over this year’s quarterfinalist at the Canadians, Brian Butler. Butler looked well on his way to a place in the knockout round, but was denied the opportunity at the very last hurdle when Mike Robinson upset the Edmontonian 2-1 and booked his place in the last 8.

KNOCKOUT ROUND

2012 Alberta Snooker Championship - Main Draw

Calgary’s Andy Chou, who turned in an impressive performance throughout the group stage, had several chances in the quarterfinal to take out tournament favourite, Tom Finstad, but trailed 2-0, then 3-1 before finally succumbing 4-2 in one of the best-contested matches of the knockout round.

Meanwhile, Mike Robinson continued an impressive run at his first attempt in a lengthy affair against Bill Cormylo which he was able to come through in a deciding frame victory, leaving Cormylo needing too many snookers on the last few balls.

In the second session of quarters, Brad Grierson faced a tough encounter in the form of Mike Abou Daher and although the frames were competitive, Brad wasn’t able to get one on the bored and was defeated 4-0. Group D winner Jesse Nowak was involved in a long and challenging tussle at the quarterfinal stage for the second year running, but on this occasion, Edmonton’s Rob Phillips joined Mike Robinson in reaching the semi-finals in his first major snooker tournament with a 4-2 victory.

Both players were rewarded with difficult prospects in the semi-finals as Robinson could not compete with the firepower of Tom Finstad, who duly booked his place in the final with a 4-0 victory that came to a close just as Nowak and Phillips finished their quarterfinal. Rob Phillips put in a spirited performance as the night went on in his clash with Abou Daher, but ultimately fell by a 4-1 scoreline.

Mike Abou Daher’s strong performance in the group stage very nearly cost Finstad his place in the knockout round, but Tom’s fierce determination in the final could not be matched as he put in a dominant performance in a whitewash victory, winning five frames in sequence and finishing the match with the tournament high break of 70.

Congratulations to Tom and Mike, the champion and runner-up at the 2012 Alberta Snooker Championship!

Quarter-Finals

Warren Saffel def. Randall Morrison 4-0

Save for one frame which came down to the black ball, Warren Saffel began his campaign for the championship with a decisive 4-0 defeat of Randall Morrison who edged into the knockout round on a walkover from Medicine Hat’s Bob Tetz in the group stage.

Dave Kutney def. John Fraser 4-0

Dave Kutney from Red Deer began to find his form as the quarter-finals began and came through with a 4-0 victory over John Fraser.

Cliff Johnson def. Earl MacMaster 4-1

Tied at one frame apiece after two, Cliff Johnson went on to win the next three in a match with Earl MacMaster to go through to the semi-finals recording a 4-1 victory.

Jesse Nowak def. Tom Jackson 4-3

On the main table, arguably the most tightly-contested match of the entire tournament, Tom Jackson, the second seed from Group A had lost only one match heading into the playoff round. After a long defensive battle in the grueling 62-minute opening frame, Tom came away with a 1-0 lead over Jesse Nowak. However, Jesse Nowak would go on to win the next three frames to take a 3-1 lead, looking for an upset victory as the dark horse in the draw. Two frames later though, another lengthy safety exchange that favoured Tom Jackson in the end brought the match to 3-3, sending it to a deciding frame. The final 32-minute frame eventually went to Jesse as Tom Jackson conceded with the blue, pink and black on the table, sending Nowak to the semi-final as the lower seed.

Semi-Finals

Warren Saffel def. Dave Kutney 4-2

Dave Kutney’s late-stage run of form continued into the semi-finals as he took a 2-1 lead over Warren Saffel after three frames. However, following a break of 44 in the fourth, Warren never looked back and reeled off three frames to progress into the finals for the second year running.

Cliff Johnson def. Jesse Nowak 4-2

Likewise, Jesse Nowak looked to be on his way to a second upset victory by leading 2-1 against Cliff Johnson in the other semi-final. Having already survived the 4½-hour quarter-final against Tom Jackson, he continued to fight out a series of close frames but Cliff would bounce back to win three straight and book a place in the final, taking the match 4 frames to 2 after holding a lead in the sixth and the pink dropped into the centre pocket off three rails.

Final

Warren Saffel def. Cliff Johnson 5-1

Late finishes to Group B’s quarter- and semi-final matches made for a late start to the final Best of 9 frame contest for the provincial championship and the tension was palpable as Cliff Johnson won the opening frame under the watchful eye of the remaining spectators, and referee John Pasley.

After Warren drew level at 1-frame apiece, Cliff had several opportunities in amongst the black spot in the subsequent frames, but costly misses left Warren free to capitalize and build up leads that were ultimately insurmountable for Cliff who trailed 4-1 after five.

The final frame was tightly contested and was tied 34-34 with only pink and black remaining. A missed pot with the rest from Warren let Cliff in to pot the pink in the yellow pocket leaving a fine cut on the black. Cliff played safe up the middle of the table but was short of pace, allowing Warren a chance to pot the black in the same pocket to take the final frame 41-40 and the championship match.
